If you want the best greens supplement, check out my comparison of Supergreen Tonik vs. Athletic Greens.

My name is Kelsey, and I’m a registered dietitian with a passion for nutrition research, education, and outreach. If you’ve been doing your research to find a good greens supplement, you may have come across one of my reviews before!

I like to start these reviews by reminding you that you may not even need a greens supplement. If you consume a well-balanced, whole foods diet with four to five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, you shouldn’t need a supplement.

However,  that can be a lot to ask. Between lack of time, storage, and budget, keeping up with all of your necessary vitamins and minerals can be tough.

That’s where a supplement can come in and help fill the gaps.

Supergreen Tonik Overview

Supergreen Tonik is a supplement produced by Human Tonik, a company started by Adam Wright. After a long struggle with chronic fatigue syndrome, Adam decided to make a formula that offers all of the essential nutrients needed to combat daily fatigue and brain fog.

The supplement is meant to be much more than just a daily multivitamin. It’s a multi-nutrient blend to cover all of your bases.

One of the best traits of this company is its transparency. Each product lists all of its ingredients and how much of it is in each serving – something that not many of its competitors do.

Main Benefits

  • Could Help Fight Off Illness: Supergreen Tonik has an immune blend of ingredients like dandelion leaf, garlic bulb, olive leaf, and black pepper fruit, all of which have been shown to improve immunity.

For example, dandelion leaf extract has been shown to have antiviral and antibacterial properties and can even limit the growth of certain diseases like hepatitis B.

  • Might Provide More Energy: Vitamins and minerals in this supplement can improve energy in healthy individuals. Specifically, vitamin B12 supplementation plays a big role in improving fatigue and even exercise tolerance.

One major player, called bacopa, is an herb that has been used for centuries to improve memory, learning, and neural health.

  • Might Improve Sleep Quality: Magnesium and B vitamins play a role in improving sleep. Other ingredients like moringa and Rhodiola have been shown to improve symptoms of chronic fatigue as well as improve sleep patterns.

Pros

  • 38 ingredients
  • Not a proprietary blend
  • Some certified organic ingredients
  • Certified caffeine-free
  • Made with local ingredients
  • Two flavor options
  • Free shipping options

Cons

  • No travel size
  • No probiotics in the formula
  • Taste is sometimes reported to be garlicky

Athletic Greens Overview

Athletic Greens is a company that produces AG1, formally known as Athletic Greens. This product is a greens blend of over 75 ingredients to benefit gut function and overall health. It was inspired by founder Chris Ashenden’s struggle with digestive issues.

AG1 is one of the most popular brands on the market, in part due to its 14-year reputation and partnerships with the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Andrew Huberman, and even No Kid Hungry.

Main Benefits

Probiotics are live bacteria that help balance our gut microbiome, while enzymes help breakdown food and reduce bloating.

  • Can Improve Immunity: Having better gut health has been shown to improve immunity. Athletic Greens also has ingredients like acerola and citric acid, which directly promote healthy immune function.

Beetroot powder even has nitric oxide, which could help improve athletic performance by increasing oxygen and glucose for better muscle performance.

  • Might Support Hormonal and Neural Function: Certain ingredients like spirulina, rosemary, and B vitamins support healthy brain function. In fact, spirulina provides iodine, which plays a role in hormonal regulation, while rosemary has been shown to improve memory in animal studies.

Pros

  • 75 nutrient-dense ingredients
  • Third-party tested by NSF
  • Travel packs and subscription purchase options
  • NSF certified for athletes
  • 7.2 billion CFU probiotics

Cons

  • Proprietary blend
  • More expensive than other supplements on the market
  • Only one flavor has been reported to change depending on the product batch
  • May contain caffeine
  • No iron or vitamin D in the product
  • No ingredients are certified organic

Supergreen Tonik vs Athletic Greens: Ingredients Breakdown

supergreen tonik vs ag1

The most important factor in every blend is what it’s made of. Let’s check out the ingredients in both supplements below.

Supergreen Tonik

Supergreen Tonik is made of three different blends: greens, nootropics, and immune support.

The greens blend is made of 100% organic ingredients like spirulina, collards, and barley grass. Meanwhile, the nootropics, which are also called cognitive enhancers, include ingredients like L-theanine and ashwagandha.

Lastly, the immune blend includes plant extracts that have been found to have immune-supporting properties.

Along with these ingredient groups, Supergreen Tonik lists 21 vitamins and minerals, including iron and vitamin D and K, both of which AG1 lacks.

As I mentioned before, Supergreen Tonik is special because it lists all of its ingredients by the amount per serving. It’s also third-party tested. That means it’s fully transparent about what is in every scoop.

Supergreen Tonik vs Athletic Greens: Taste Test

Now on to taste. In some cases, it is just as important as ingredients. You won’t continue to drink something you don’t like!

supergreen tonik alternative

Supergreen Tonik Taste

Supergreen Tonik comes in two flavors: mint and berry. Many customers have mixed opinions on the taste, which I think comes down to preference.

For those who want a more refreshing flavor, go for the mint. Those who like a sweeter taste should go for the berry. Both are reported to taste better cold.

Some bad reviews complain of a garlicky smell or taste, but not in every batch.

Athletic Greens Taste

Athletic Greens comes in just one flavor that isn’t specifically labeled but is described as vanilla and pineapple.

Many customers report it to be earthy and somewhat grainy, while others find it tropical and refreshing when cold.

Differences in flavor and texture between batches have been reported. Athletic Greens even responded to these differences by comparing their product to wine: “The flavor can be impacted by the time of the year, the weather conditions or even where [the ingredients] sourced.”

Comparison of Side Effects and Safety

Both Supergreen Tonik and Athletic Greens recommend that those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under medical supervision check with a doctor before taking.

ag1 vs supergreen tonik

Both products are third-party tested, vegan, and dairy-free. Supergreen Tonik is certified caffeine and soy-free but contains tea nuts, while Athletic Greens is certified gluten and peanut-free.

While there are no reported side effects of taking Supergreen Tonik, some customers said they experienced bloating and digestive issues after taking Athletic Greens.

This can be attributed to the high volume of probiotics per serving. Reducing your serving size and gradually increasing it over time is recommended to build tolerance.

Supergreen Tonik vs Athletic Greens: Which Is the Best Option?

Supergreen Tonik beats Athletic Greens when it comes to cognitive benefits, transparency, organic ingredients, flavors, and price.

Meanwhile, Athletic Greens offer more digestive benefits and travel packs.

Both lack a couple of the nutrients that the other provides, and both may contain an allergen or compound that you may be trying to avoid.

But who comes out on top?

Why We Think Supergreen Tonik Is the Better Option

When we weigh it all out, it’s clear that Supergreen Tonik is the better option.

Just the transparency of the nutrition label alone is enough to sway my opinion. But, other perks like lower prices and flavor options seal the deal.

It also has iron and vitamin D, which many users wish they could find in Athletic Greens.

Final Thoughts on Supergreen Tonik vs Athletic Greens

That wraps up our deep dive on Athletic Greens vs Supergreen Tonik.

As a closing reminder, you may not need a greens supplement at all. I recommend you first take a look at your diet. Ensure you’re incorporating whole fruits, vegetables, and other nutrients before relying on a supplement to do the work for you.

However, any greens supplement that is third-party tested, filled with nutrients, and sustainable for your lifestyle can help fill in the gaps.

From this review, I believe Supergreen Tonik is the better supplement to help meet those requirements. If you’d like to try it yourself, click here to purchase.
