In this review, I will analyze the specific components of this nootropic supplement and assess the credibility of its health claims and whether it really enables limitless brain function as advertised.

Cognizin

Citicoline (AKA Cognizin) has been proposed as an effective treatment method for a variety of cerebrovascular conditions which negatively impact cognitive function. 

Research has suggested a benefit of this compound in restoring cognition following a stroke or in the setting of dementia. However, most studies have cited its effectiveness in those with cognitive deficits and not in those with normal cognitive function. Additionally, high blood levels are generally needed in order for it to be effective.

Phosphatidylserine (PS) 

Phosphatidylserine is a compound that serves a variety of functions within the body. Among these is the ability to help transmit messages between various nerve cells in the brain, thus improving signal transmission and overall brain function.

In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial, elderly Japanese subjects with cognitive impairment noted significant improvement in memory when supplemented with soybean-derived phosphatidylserine.

Although its effectiveness in improving memory and cognitive function has been seen in several studies, its long-term impact is unknown.

Lions’ mane mushroom

When combined with nerve growth factor (NGF), lions’ mane mushroom has proven beneficial in stimulating the growth of brain cells, a bodily function that often declines as we age. This may render it effective in preventing the cognitive decline we see in conjunction with aging.

Interestingly, lions’ mane mushroom has also been thought to have anti-dementia properties,  helping to protect against the development of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Animal studies have shown a positive impact of this mushroom and its extracts on memory loss and neuronal damage resulting from amyloid-beta plaques that accumulate in those with Alzheimer’s.

Although there is not currently evidence of this effect in humans, there is research showing improved cognitive function in humans with a mild cognitive impairment. Of note, this improvement in brain function disappeared when supplementation was stopped.

N-Acetyl-Tyrosine

Tyrosine is thought to have the ability to help improve one’s mental performance during stressful situations. 

Studies conducted in both animals and humans have shown that stressful situations, such as a cold environment or challenging mental task, result in decreased neurotransmitters and, as a result, impaired memory. Supplementing with tyrosine, however, helps restore memory by reversing this decline in neurotransmitters.

While there is certainly strong evidence for the use of tyrosine in the presence of a stressor, there’s currently no research to support the use of tyrosine for enhanced mental performance in the absence of stressful stimuli.

Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa Monnieri, also known as Brahmi, is a plant that has historically been used in holistic medicine for treating a variety of ailments. Two of its staple treatment uses include treating stress and anxiety as well as improving memory.

Research does support its claim to enhance cognitive function. Several studies have shown that, when supplemented in humans, it helped improve memory, attention, learning rate, and ability to and speed of processing information as compared with placebo treatment.

Maritime Pine Bark Extract

Maritime pine bark is another herbal medication that is touted for its broad range of pharmacological uses, including improved cognitive function.

While it does appear to have some impact on cognition, the research available was conducted on very specific populations. 

One study, conducted in animals, observed a neuroprotective effect following traumatic brain injury. The pine bark extract helped reduce nerve cell damage in this population, which is attributed to its ability to reduce oxidative stress.

Additionally, a benefit has been observed in children with ADHD. Studies have demonstrated improved attention span and concentration during supplementation, which resolves within one month after stopping the supplement.

L-Theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid which is thought to reduce stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Additionally, it has been suggested to help increase focus.

Although there is some research to support this claim, L-theanine hasn’t necessarily been deemed effective when given alone. Its ability to increase focus and alertness has only been observed when taken in combination with caffeine. Additionally, the effect of L-theanine on focus appears mild at best and short-term in nature.

Rhodiola Rosea

Much like the other ingredients, this herb has been used in naturopathic medicine for the treatment of anxiety and depression. It has been widely accepted as an adaptogen due to its ability to increase the body’s resistance to different types of stress. 

One study found that Rhodiola positively impacted physical and mental fatigue resulting from stress as a result of its adaptogenic properties.

Several additional studies have observed decreased mental fatigue, increased capacity for mental work, and improved cognitive performance with Rhodiola supplementation in subjects who were working night shifts.

Vitamins B6, B9, & B12

The B vitamins have been of increasing interest recently for their roles in energy production and brain function. B6, B9, and B12 are particularly of interest because deficiencies of these vitamins are relatively common, particularly in the older adult population who are also most prone to cognitive decline.

Research does support an association between B vitamins and cognitive function, with studies showing reduced cognitive performance in the presence of a deficiency and improvement following supplementation.
