Welcome to my Flybird Adjustable Dumbbells review 25 lbs. Note that this review is specifically for the 25 lb. version of their product.

Why do we do our weight training at the gym? Well, when you consider the cost of a rack of dumbbells and how much space they take up, it just makes sense. Or at least it used to.

Now, adjustable dumbbells are becoming the norm, helping us complete some of our training from the comfort of home. With adjustable dumbbells, you only need one set – you’re not taking up a lot of space or spending money on pair after pair.

The thing is, while adjustable dumbbells can be more economical than a whole 10-piece set, some still cost as much as a year or two at the gym.

The ones I’m about to tell you about don’t. Does that mean they’re lower in quality?

Today, I’ll give you all of the details on Flybird Adjustable Dumbbell – the pros, the cons, and how they compare to other products.

Keep reading to find out if Flybird is the best value in adjustable dumbbells.

Who is Flybird Fitness?

I always like to see who’s behind a company before I start adding things to my cart. What’s their motivation? Are they only in it for the money, or are they really solving a problem?

Well, Flybird’s story couldn’t be more relatable. Their founder, Shane Draw, kept having sinus reactions to the way his local gym smelled. Like so many of us have, he decided it was time to work out at home.

The trouble was, he found that a lot of home workout equipment wasn’t up to snuff. He set out to improve upon the standard offerings with Flybird.

Today, the company makes its mission clear:

“We help people enjoy fitness more by providing them with the right equipment at good prices. We have a range of products to suit everyone’s needs…anything from weight benches to dumbbells. FLYBIRD remains committed to providing professional workout experiences without going to the gym, as it has done since it was founded.”

flybird adjustable dumbbells review: Product Overview

I’ll break down the specs next, but first, let me tell you exactly how this works.

The Flybird Adjustable Dumbbell (25 lb.) has a base weight of approximately five pounds. That’s just the handle and slots without the extra weight plates locked in.

There are eight extra plates in total; four on each side of the dumbbell. Each one weighs about 2.5 pounds.

If you’re new to weights and just want to add a little to your aerobic exercise, calisthenics, or whatever you prefer, you might find that the five-pound base is enough for the time being.

The Flybird comes with a slotted tray the dumbbell sits in. You should have it sitting in this tray when you adjust the weight so the plates are in the proper position to either lock in or release.

Adjusting the weight is easy. You twist the handle to the desired number on your dumbbell and it will grab or release the appropriate amount of plates.

I cannot stress enough the importance of making sure the dumbbell is clicked into the base when adjusting. The plates you don’t use will remain in the base when lifted.

Flybird 55-lb. Adjustable Dumbbell

If you’re a more experienced lifter, you’re likely to prefer Flybird’s 55-lb. edition.

As best I can tell, this is essentially the same as the 25-lb. dumbbell, just with bigger (heavier) plates.

There is one other noticeable design difference, though. The 25-lb. version has a textured aluminum-alloy handle. The 55-lb. version is made of tough black plastic.

Flybird Adjustable Dumbbell Construction

Here are some relevant design details you should review before trying Flybird.

Materials and Finish

As we learned moments ago, the handle of the 25-lb. dumbbell is an aluminum alloy that has texture etched in for grip. It has a metallic, chrome-like finish.

Meanwhile, the dumbbell plates have a frosted black powder coating. Either end of the handle, which is notched for the plates, is made of tough plastic.

Weight Dial

The dial to adjust the weight is clearly printed in white on the black plastic part of the base handle, right next to the aluminum grip. It’s easy to see, understand, and use.

8-Lock Safety Design

I have stressed how critical it is that you have your dumbbell in its base tray when adjusting.

Just in case you forget, Flybird has built a safety feature into the design which prevents the plates from slipping out when not in the tray.

Base Tray

The base tray is specifically designed to fit the Flybird Adjustable Dumbbell it came with. It should fit securely enough that you can tell when the dumbbell is sitting in it properly.

The tray is made of sturdy plastic that Flybird describes as “high strength material”.

Weight Selection

The key feature of this dumbbell, naturally, is that it is adjustable. But to truly know if it’s right for you, you need to make sure the progression of weight increase is realistic.

You cannot add weight to one side of the dumbbell. It would make the device unbalanced to the point of danger.

Therefore, you can only increase or decrease weight in five-pound increments – 2.5 pounds on each side at a time. If you are a beginner or are recovering from illness or injury, this is of particular concern.

When you are ready to step up in weight, go slowly and do fewer reps. It’s not as forgiving as going up a pound or two at a time, but it can be done with caution and patience.

Storage & Dumbbell Tray

What do you get when you leave your dumbbells on the floor? Stubbed toes. One fortunate aspect of the Flybird Adjustable Dumbbells is that they’re easy to slide under a table or bed.

The company claims that your dumbbell will take up less than one square meter of space, which seems accurate to me.

Further, since they sit neatly in their tray you’re much less likely to stumble on one first thing in the morning. The tray is a few inches tall, elevating the weights a bit.

Just pop your dumbbell back in the tray when you’re done, slide it to the side, and you’ll forget all about it.

Warranty

Flybird is quite generous when it comes to refunds, returns, satisfaction guarantees, and warranties.

All Flybird products are automatically covered under a one-year warranty. The warranty is described as a “manufacturer’s 1-year all-inclusive warranty against all manufacturing defects.”

There’s also the 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you try the Flybird Adjustable Dumbbells for a few weeks and decide it isn’t for you, returns are free.

The 30 days begins upon delivery.

Flybird Adjustable Dumbbell Benefits

I’m going to present some quickfire pros and cons next. For now, let’s examine what makes a Flybird Adjustable Dumbbell worth considering in the first place.

More Affordable

Flybird’s adjustable dumbbells aren’t dirt cheap, but they do cost less than many other brands.

Speaking of cost, be sure to check Amazon and the website before purchasing. While they are currently on sale on Amazon, they can run even cheaper on Flybird’s website depending on what promotions they have going on.

Small-Space Friendly

If you have a roommate and/or live in an apartment, storing strength training gear may seem laughable.

As we just discussed, Flybird’s dumbbells integrate easily into small or shared spaces. Plus, it’s good for quiet exercise, whether you have close neighbors or are trying not to wake the baby.

Easy to Adjust

Some (much more expensive) brands keep the dial on the outside of the weight. This isn’t wrong, necessarily. I still prefer how Flybird keeps in on the inside, directly next to the grip you’ll be twisting to adjust the weight.

Great Introduction to Strength Training

This is a good product for beginners, particularly because it’s the 25-lb. version.

The portability coupled with the affordable price makes it a very reasonable investment for your first foray into strength training. You won’t need to feel publicly intimidated at the gym, and you can slowly build strength and tone up on your own time.

Perfect for Home Use

This product was quite literally created for people who can no longer tolerate going to the gym.

Study up on a range of exercises, and good adjustable dumbbells can replace a lot of the equipment we travel and pay to use.

Full-Body Exercise

I never stick with equipment that targets one area. Dumbbells might sound basic, but they’re a wise choice if you prioritize total body fitness.

The upper body, lower body, and core can all benefit from simple weights. And since these are adjustable, you don’t have to buy multiple sets.

Upper body weaker than the lower body? Just dial it down and build up at your own pace.

Flybird Adjustable Dumbbells Customer Reviews

Flybird Adjustable Dumbbells have netted thousands of positive reviews. On the website, it’s rating currently stands at 4.9 stars overall.

On Amazon, it has amassed an impressive number of five-star reviews, taking its current rating to 4.7 out of five stars.

Scanning the reviews, people are generally very pleased with how well this product facilitates home workouts. Multiple reviewers also compare Flybird favorably to more expensive brands.

Most also confirm that adjusting the weight is smooth and easy. If there are one minor problem customers have, it’s getting used to sitting the dumbbell in its tray just right.

The few negative reviews I could find indicate that the product isn’t as durable as they had hoped, or that weights slip off while in use.

I cannot verify if this is truly an issue since there’s no way to know if the weight was adjusted properly in its tray. More reviewers state that the weight is so secure, there isn’t ever any rattling.

Final Verdict

I would never recommend that the average strength trainer or beginner getting into home workouts spend $500 or more on adjustable dumbbells. That’s what makes Flybird a good buy – it is less risky than many other models like it.

Powerlifters would be better off buying a heavier, pricier set. Not only are we discussing a version that’s lightweight, but they might have a shorter life than others thanks to the plastic parts.

All in all, Flybird has made strength training at home more accessible. The brand does need to improve its website a bit, but its solid offerings mean there’s room to grow.
